Relocating - Before and After

What You Will Need To Do Before You Relocate Your Residence

Being prepared to move and making all the necessary arrangements before hand will help to make the process as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Remember, moving to and into a new home can be as traumatic an experience, as it can be an enjoyable one. The more you prepare yourself and your family, the greater the chances your move will be a seamless one.

Long Term Planning (one to two months in advance)

  1. Prepare for and complete all arrangements relative to your new home purchase or rental.
  2. Hire a moving company, or if moving yourself, reserve all the necessary vehicles and equipment need to move your family and possessions.
  3. Check with your insurance company and make the proper arrangements as to the coverage of your possessions during a move.
  4. Plan and make all the necessary travel arrangements (if someone else is transporting your possessions). Moving can become an expensive proposition so be certain that you know and understand the expenses and logistics involved.
  5. Pack and catalog as many of your possessions as possible. Be sure to have all the necessary supplies required to carefully pack and move your belongings: boxes, packing, labels, etc.
  6. Notify the IRS, all your banks and creditors, insurers, schools, friends and family and service providers. (At both your new and old locations.)
  7. Collect and file all of your legal, medical and insurance documents.
  8. If you have young children start discussing your move and try to get them involved in the process so as to make the transition a good one for them.

Short Term Planning (two to three weeks in advance)

  1. Prepare all utility and service providers for your move, both at your old address and new one.
    1. Water (if municipal)
    2. Gas
    3. Electric
    4. Telephone (local and long distance)
    5. Cable television
    6. Internet service provider
    7. Garbage removal
    8. Landscape maintenance
    9. Pool maintenance
    10. Newspapers
  2. Confirm that all the above long term moving projects are in motion or completed.
